Unicorn Love
This June, I spotted a new hashtag which I hadn’t known about before, and it stood out to me because I love drawing unicorns! The hashtag is #junicorn .
Years ago, when I first started creating illustrations for my little card business, (I still sell my cards on Etsy in case you need one) I drew a range of cards and prints, featuring unicorns. At the time, unicorns were on the up, they were everywhere ! Now they are still popular , but not quite as much as then.
So, I’ve not drawn a unicorn for a white, and creating a new unicorn illustration was so fun, a bit like slipping back into that comfy place, putting on an old favourite jumper.
I find the process of creating illustrations like this easy, but so joyful. I think because of the magic of something which isn’t (necessarily) real, I can let my imagination run free. Use unusual colours, combine different materials to create textures, use light to highlight the bit I want people’s eyes to be drawn to. Combine this with an illustration made in my sketchbook for my own personal pleasure, no deadline, just pure fun, and it ends up as an illustration I really love.
I would love to illustrate a book about unicorns, and use all of this magical mark making and texture and put it into a big project.
